Leonard Thurman – Instructor

Since he could remember Leonard has always had a deep love of music. He was an award winning musician through grade school. Upon entering university, Leonard dropped one artistic pursuit for another: Ballroom Dancing. Freshman year, Spring Semester he haphazardly signed up for introductory class and the following Fall he auditioned and was accepted onto the NMSU Dancesport Company. It was watching Victor Fung and Anna Mikead that he would decide to go all in and moved to enroll Betty Burgess, the Founder of NMSU Dancesport to coach him for several years until his departure to Denver.

Upon returning and graduating NMSU, he became an independent instructor in Las Cruces; teaching group classes, private lessons, children and wedding couples. He developed a love for Salsa and the community it creates, so with his students’ help, he built one from ground zero in Las Cruces. In May 2015, Leonard started his training with Edie the SalsaFREAK and qualified as a Black Belt Salsa Instructor which has given an exciting and unique spark to his own style and feeling of dancing. He returned to Las Cruces and opened New Mexico’s first Black Belt School, now run by Teacher Apprentice Anna Granados. He was also Director of La Pandilla Feliz, a Casino Rueda Performance Group who regularly performed in Community and was invited to perform at the Annual Las Cruces Salsa Festival and the Denver Salsa Congress.

Leonard believes there is a power in dance to unite all people no matter what creed; to heal that that ails us natural to the human condition. It is a gift that he hopes to be able to give to all that he is fortunate to come in contact with and wishes all his students the happiness that the journey of dance provides. He thanks everyone that have and will be a part of his own dance journey for their helping heart and hand and hopes to lend the same to his students as his teachers, mentors and friends have given him.
