Tips for Your First Dance
We know the wedding dance lessons process can be overwhelming! Here are our tips to simplify your dance practice so you can keep the focus on your fiance!
We haven’t finalized our song just yet…
Having a song selected is not a prerequisite for your first scheduled appointment. However, having your options narrowed down to a short-list will absolutely help your instructor choose figures and styles that align with your top contenders. You’ll definitely want to have your choice solidified by lesson number two, to ensure you have sufficient time to feel comfortable getting your movements to the music and practicing to the specific cut you’ll be using.
Unsure what style of dance would match your music?
Let our experts guide you! Because it is a wedding dance, we can take liberties in combining various styles of dance into one routine to make it uniquely yours, and representative of the moment you’d like to create. For some couples, they very much love a certain song, but are less inspired by the style of movement that best suits it. Once your selections are narrowed down, our professional instructors can show you what those styles look like, so that you can factor that into your decision.
(great place to add snippets of waltz, rumba, etc…. for reference)
Our song is really long…
Don’t worry – fortunately, all our wedding packages include music edits. For our Our First Dance package, the edit is a one-time simple cut of the music, and further or complicated edits would be at an additional charge.
How long should our first dance be?
The best answer we can give you is whatever feels most right to you. As with most things ‘wedding’ you’ll hear infinite opinions about traditions, etiquette, and what is ‘normal.’ Take those with a grain of salt, knowing that ultimately, this is your day, and YOUR vision should guide your decisions.
That said, our couples are often surprised at how fast the moment goes by! For those that think they’ll only want a 1-minute moment, we would encourage you to get a lesson or two under your belt before committing to your music cut. Once you start to get your wits (and feet) about you, you may want to extend it a bit longer to show everyone the work and effort you put into your dance! In general, first dances tend to be in the 2–3-minute range, and dances with parents slightly shorter.
So we have a unique circumstance…
Let’s talk through it! Whether you’re wanting to pay homage to or incorporate a special person in your moment, or whether you have cultural traditions you’d like us to take into consideration, we can talk through options to make your moment as true to your vision as possible.
What do we need to consider when choosing our song/dance or preparing for our first lesson?
Your instructor will ask you a few ‘logistical’ questions to help craft your wedding dance lessons, get everyone on the same page, better understand your vision, and contextualize your first dance within the reception. Here’s how you can help us help YOU:
1. Have a general idea of the danceable area you’ll be performing in, and if there are any obstructions (poles, pillars, tables, etc.) that we should be aware of.
2. Know the surface type of your dance floor. (wood, cement, slated deck… we’ve done it all).
3. Be willing to share (even if privately out of earshot of your fiancé) a little about what you’re wearing so we can accommodate any potential movement restrictions for either of you. This may include dress style, bustle, fit of the jacket, or shoe/heel type.
What’s trending?
Country-rustic wedding trends are in right now with many couples electing to use a country song for their first dance. Chris Stapleton, Florida Georgia Line, Kelsey Hart, and Tyler Childers have some of today’s top contenders if you’re looking for that laid back, romantic country vibe!
Mash-ups?
Always an option if choosing just one song seems utterly impossible. Consider how the songs will fit together and whether you want them to be a similar style, or completely different. These often offer a great opportunity for the couple to surprise their guests with a show-stopping moment!
Classic Songs, reimagined.
You know the old faithfuls “At Last,” “Stand by Me,” … the songs that have been here for generations. Many newer artists have covered these classics adding a unique twist or in a totally different style than the original. If you are worried that the song you love has been overdone, consider searching for covers that make it feel more like you!
For Parent Dances
If you’re looking for inspiration, here are some ideas we can really get behind:
Songs that are a nod to the spirit of your relationship with mom/dad… Whether it’s their favorite song that was the soundtrack of your childhood, or something sentimental. The more the two of you feel connected to the song, the more your guests will connect to this special moment.
It doesn’t have to be so serious. For some, sentimental fits. For others, they’d rather the moment be playful and fun. That is totally okay and we LOVE when clients come to us with a request to incorporate a moment or move that is uniquely them.
It doesn’t have to be long nor fancy, to be meaningful. Don’t let the stress of what tradition tells you, take the fun out of what can be a truly special memory. You don’t want to just enjoy the moment… but also ideally the journey to get there. Parents can get so nervous wanting everything to be just perfect on the big day… but to us, the most perfect is when your confidence allows you to relax and enjoy the moment.
